Join us on Monday, June 19th and Wednesday, June 21st for Nanfu Wang’s powerful HOOLIGAN SPARROW (China/U.S., Documentary), screening as part of the Austin Film Society’s “Cinema of Resistance” series!
Ye Haiyan, a.k.a. “Hooligan Sparrow,” is at the forefront of gender activism in China, initially focusing on the conditions faced by sex workers. That focus shifts when she learns of six primary school girls sexually assaulted by their principal and his associate, who escaped without punishment thanks to their status and China’s sclerotic legal system. Ye marshals all the tools at her disposal—including social media and public demonstrations—to bring broader attention to this grave crime, at immense cost to herself and her own young daughter. Nanfu Wang (director of this year’s award-winning SXSW selection I AM ANOTHER YOU) waged her own running battle with the Chinese authorities to produce this raw but inspiring look at means of resistance and their implications for women’s rights and the fight against corruption.
