MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART comes to town this month, courtesy of the Austin Film Society! The latest film from Chinese master Jia Zhangke (STILL LIFE, A TOUCH OF SIN) will screen at 6:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 14th at the AFS Cinema, 6226 Middle Fiskville Rd. For an in-depth look at the film, check out our Programmers’ Blog.

Jia Zhangke follows the contentious A TOUCH OF SIN with a less savage but equally compelling look at changing values in 21st-century China. Divided into three connected sections, MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART opens with a love triangle in 1999 and ends with a Chinese-Australian teenager seeking his roots in 2025. But even as he spans decades and continents, Jia employs an intimate touch, delivering an emotionally potent look at the pursuit of “freedom” and how it affects the most fundamental social relationships. Anchored by Zhao Tao’s affecting lead performance, MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART sees Jia operating in a more approachable, classical mode, without losing his trenchant powers of observation.
