GOOK, winner of the NEXT Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is now playing in Austin! Writer-director Justin Chon (REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS, AAAFF ’14; SEOUL SEARCHING, AAAFF ’15) also stars as Eli, a young Korean American in 1992 Los Angeles. Daniel operates his late father’s shoe store alongside his brother Daniel (David So, JustKiddingFilms), who prefers fantasies of R&B stardom to running the family business. The two bond with Kamilla (Simone Baker), an 11-year-old girl from the local African American community—a friendship that is put to the test when tensions boil over after the Rodney King verdicts. Strikingly filmed in black and white, GOOK is “a hardass yet hypnotically beautiful film that snarls and sparks to incite, not a fever in the blood, but an urgent conversation about what makes us human” (Rolling Stone).
